Love Your RV: How much did our snowbird trip cost?

WASHINGTON — Well, our 7th snowbirding adventure in a row is in the books. This year we once again visited the southwestern United States spending the bulk of our time in sunny California and Arizona. We spent much of the time off-grid free camping in desert BLM areas and casinos along the way which sure saved on camping fees!

One question I’m often asked is “How much does it cost?” So, I’ve gone through our receipts from the 6-month trip and organized our basic expenses into categories. The figures aren’t 100% exact but in the general ballpark. Hopefully, you’ll find it useful as you plan your trip south next winter.

Neighbors found it cheaper to rent a condo in the Keys and another along the Gulf than a full hook up space last winter. Many items like insurance, health care and etc I do not count on our snowbird expenses as they would be there if we stayed home. We do not count eating out or entertainment as we would be doing that at home as well. CG fees and fuel getting to/from our site is all that is tracked. Our two month stay plus two travel days each way the past two years amounted to over $5800. Much more expense in the SE than SW.
