Today’s episode features a team of folks from Winegard talking about some new developments in outdoor entertainment products and the impact those devices will have on the RV industry.
Marvin Metzler is the senior director of business development for Winegard’s mobile market. He is joined by Jarod Ford, the product manager for mobile products, and Lance Beck, the director of product development for IoT products — and IoT means internet of things.
They talk about Wi-Fi and why it is becoming more important to RV dealers and manufacturers, especially with the anticipated release of more 5G products.
They describe HDTV antennas and RV satellite systems and explain why consumers are so eager to embrace them.
They discuss ways RV dealers can get in on the action and what it would take for them to provide their customers with the satellite systems, HDTV antennas and Wi-Fi equipment they are looking for.
The Internet of Things promises to shake up the way RVs are built and used as well, with special emphasis on how components are communicating with each other.
It really is funny how big a role technology is playing in the RV lifestyle. You’d think camping would be about escaping the hustle and bustle of the tech world, but the number of people who bring gadgets with them while RVing is testimony to how pervasive technology is in everyone’s life.
It started years ago when people simply wanted to watch TV in their RVs, and it has expanded quickly to include satellite reception, high-definition antennas and, most importantly, wireless and cellular connections to enable Internet use and streaming of entertainment options.
Through it all, Winegard has remained one or two steps ahead of the rest of the tech world. I had the opportunity to tour their factory in Burlington, Iowa, a few years ago. It’s an impressive research and development facility.
The interview closes by explaining what people participating in the RVX event next week in Salt Lake City can find at the Winegard display as well as on many RVs being exhibited at the show.
