Most of the sites at Platte River Campground already took reservations, but D.H. Day Campground was entirely first-come first-serve, leading to long lines overnight as people waited to nab a site. The National Park Service says the change to reservations will fix those long lines.
It had been decades since Buttonwood Park in Wood County saw any severe damage from the river, until 2015. After restoring and rebuilding just a few years ago, Wood County Park officials are back to square one following this last winter’s heavy rains and ice flows.
“Nearly 80 people overfilled the meeting hall. More importantly, putting faces to the names of over two-dozen newcomer campground owners and managers and to over half a dozen newcomer industry suppliers was truly uplifting,” said Arlington.

The South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks reports that a portion of Lake Vermillion Recreation Area near Canistota is closed due to flooding.
