OPINION: Mobilegeddon is here. Is your business ready?

There has been a lot of talk about Google’s Mobilegeddon in the last couple of months and it has finally arrived.

For those that are unaware, Mobilegeddon is the given name that everyone has been using referring to Google’s latest update that was rolled out April 21. The purpose of the update was to force everyone who has a website and wants to rank high for their keywords to have a mobile or responsive website. Google places high importance on mobile search, as it has overtaken PC search recently.

More and more people are turning to their mobile devices for surfing and searching the web. Google knows this and has placed high importance on it with this latest update.

There have been many articles written about this particular subject over the last few weeks and they have ranged from the hysterical (the sky is falling), to encouraging laziness with this update and not taking it seriously.

I’m here to tell you, that this is something to take serious, but the world is not going to end if you haven’t converted your site to being mobile friendly. I like to take the approach with SEO (search engine optimization) that if Google, who claims more than 65 percent of the search market share, considers something important in regards to websites, you better get on board if you want to succeed in showing up high in their search results.

If you haven’t converted your site to being mobile friendly, you need to start now. This isn’t just about your rankings on Google, although they will be significantly effected if you don’t have a mobile site. Its about your customers and potential customers.

If they are searching for your industry and arrive on your website on a mobile device, will they have a good experience using your site? Will they stick around and engage with you or will they move on to your competition who does have a good mobile experience?

Your website says a lot about your business and it is usually the first impression someone gets of you. The question to ask is, “Am I making a great first impression on my customers?” This is why Google has made this update, because they want to reward those who are asking this question and answering with a resounding YES!
