U.S. consumer spending rises in July

(Aug. 28, 2009) -- "The 0.2 percent rise in the volume of personal consumer expenditures in July following an upwardly revised 0.1 percent gain in June is encouraging as it points strongly to a return to positive growth in consumer spending in the third quarter," said Ferley. "Our current monitoring suggests an annualized increase in the third quarter of 1.7 percent up from the 1 percent decline recorded in the second quarter."
