RV slideout inventor visits Dick Gore RV World

Mahlon Miller, left, is the founder of Newmar Corp. With him is Matthew Miller, president of the company.JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – He has been named one of the “100 Most Influential People in the History of the RV Industry” by RV Business Magazine, and Floridians will have a chance to meet Mahlon Miller in person between June 6 between 2 and 4 p.m.

That’s when the founder of Newmar Corporation visits Dick Gore RV World as part of the Go Newmar Roadshow 2011, which features four brand-new Class A diesel coaches in a caravan that will cover 4,500 miles in 20 days.

“This is a chance for folks to meet the last true living icon in the RV world,” says Ricky Dee, Newmar specialist at Dick Gore RV World.

In 1991, this power slide-out (holding the sofa) was a welcome innovation for RVers used to a tight coach floorplan.Back in 1990, Mahlon Miller invented the power slide-out, now a familiar feature of high-end coaches. And Dee was the one who sold the first slide-out in Florida back in the day.

Called the “Father of Power Slide-Outs,” Miller was inducted in 1998 into the RV/MH Heritage Foundation Hall of Fame. The holder of numerous patents, he has long been known as an innovator.

Newmar was the first RV manufacturer to have flat-floor slide-outs, the first to offer central air conditioning that eliminated ‘hot spots’, and the first to put a dual-wheeled power porch on a fifth wheel. In addition, Miller introduced the first toy hauler with a full-size bedroom on the floor instead of a loft.

Dick Gore said he founded Dick Gore’s RV World in 1985, recognizing the need for world-class service in order to create his well-deserved niche in the industry.

This 2012 Newmar coach shows how far RV designs with slide-outs have changed in just 20 years. “That’s what built my business — taking care of customers after the sale,” he said.

With three locations — Jacksonville and St. Augustine, Fla., and Richmond Hill, Ga. — Dick Gore RV World is a full-service dealership, offering Class A, B and C motorhomes, travel trailers, fifth wheels, toy haulers and tent camper, as well as extensive parts and service departments.

Dick Gore’s RV World’s Jacksonville location is 14590 Duval Place West. For more information about the chance to meet Miller, call the dealership at 800.635.7008.

  1. didn’t NuWa have power slide-outs before that? Yes

  2. How did someone “invert” something in 1990 when it already existed? For example, NuWa had power slide-out prior to 1990.

  3. No before thus they only had hydraulic slideouts that required the engine to be started these are fully electric and can operate with the engine off.
