RV Business: Friesen warns of challenges ahead as RV sales escalate

UNITED STATES: RV Business reports that some fantastic news came out of the RV industry last month–more than 470,000 units are projected to be produced in 2017, and the RVIA estimate for next year is a shade over 487,000.

While that’s great news for manufacturers and dealers, it also exposes long-building issues: the need for more camp sites and for enhancements to customer support, especially in parts and warranty. It’s hard to say which is the biggest challenge right now, but they could be termed problems 1 and 1A.

  1. There is already a shortage of campsites. In many snowbird areas there has been for years. Public CGs are not going to help much, at least not for decades. Many proposed new campgrounds cannot get permits and projects die on the vine. Many private CGs are taking sites away by selling them or building rental cabins. I would never dream of going on the road today without reservations at every stop. We have already become 3 season travelers forgetting June/July/August altogether. Without some positive private growth of campgrounds the manufacturers will die 1st and CW last.
