PRVCA air conditioning course starts May 22

CAMP HILL, Pa. — The RV Air Conditioning Service Course begins May 22 and runs through June 18.  The online program, which is run by Northampton Community College and the Pennsylvania RV and Camping Association (PRVCA), allows students to gain an in-depth understanding of recreation vehicle maintenance with intensive, competency-based instruction.

Students simply log on to access the lecture notes, hands-on assignments, quizzes and chat with the instructor and other students. The program gives students the flexibility to complete the course from the comfort of their home or dealership without having the expense of traveling to a training facility.

The program is approved by RVIA and qualifies for recertification hours.  Students receive a certificate of completion successful completion of the course. The program is designed for RV maintenance and sales personnel, service managers, factory field technicians, service representatives, inspectors and those seeking a new, hands-on career in a growing industry.

Those who complete the entire program will earn a specialized diploma from Northampton Community College. Students not wishing to obtain the specialized diploma may also enroll in individual courses as desired. Those who earn the specialized diploma will be prepared to test for the RV service technician or a master certified RV service technician with the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA).

This course examines the roof-top air conditioner in detail. Revisiting the fundamentals of alternating current electricity also, the students jump into the science of the refrigeration cycle. Delving into the properties of vaporization and condensation and applying the principles of compression, students gain the skill necessary to troubleshoot component failures along with the ability to repair and/or replace vital components. Installation requirements and preventive maintenance practices are also learned in this course.

After successful completion of this course the student will effectively be able to:

  • Explain the properties of heat transfer.
  • Identify components and their functions.
  • Explain how a refrigeration cycle operates.
  • Convert temperature measurements from Fahrenheit to Celsius.
  • Identify and measure the heat of vaporization and condensation.
  • Identify and measure super heat and sub-cooling.
  • Demonstrate the ability to perform necessary mathematical, measurement and geometric functions.
  • Apply the principles of compression refrigeration to an RV air conditioner.
  • Define air conditioner components.
  • Identify refrigerant cycle.
  • Identify types of RV air conditioning systems.
  • Inspect evaporator.
  • Explain the properties of refrigerants (R22, R12 and R134a).
  • Identify commonly used air conditioning terminology.
  • Identify Montreal protocol.
  • Identify safe handling and environmental concerns of refrigerants.
  • Identify air flow cycles.
  • Visually inspect for blockages.
  • Measure operations of A/C circuits.
  • Measure A/C components.
  • Determine proper system operation
  • Test the systems functions.
  • Repair and/or replace faulty components.
  • Clean filters.
  • Determine air flow and ducting requirements.
  • Verify proper operation.
  • Read wiring diagrams.
  • Determine electrical requirements.
  • Identify specific A/C tools and their uses.
  • Measure air flow temperature.
  • Identify recovery and recycling of refrigerants.
  • Braze lines and components in RV units.
  • Operate, store and maintain oxyacetylene equipment.
  • Determine when a system requires evacuation.
  • Evacuate a refrigeration system.
  • Maintain a vacuum pump.
  • Recharge a refrigeration system.
  • Diagnose and repair a compression refrigeration system.
  • Mount and seal an A/C unit per specifications.
  • Isolate refrigeration problems.
  • Identify codes and standards.
