Podcast 76: KOA’s Toby O’Rourke and Techno RV

Podcast episode 76 opens with a brief discussion of the exceptional year KOA campground owners have enjoyed in 2015. Numbers released during this year’s KOA convention in Daytona Beach showed that business is up 39.7 percent since 2011, which is significantly greater that some of the other big brands in America.

The first guest is Toby O’Rourke, KOA’s senior vice president of marketing. Widely credited for the successful performance of the franchise over the past four years, she talks about why demand for camping and outdoor experiences is on the rise.

She also describes some new marketing initiatives the company had implemented, including the release this week of a brand new interactive website.

O’Rourke is the mastermind behind KOA’s What’s Behind the Yellow Sign campaign, and she talks about why it is so successful, and what’s being done to improve that campaign in 2016.

The second guests are relative newcomers to the RV industry. Eric and Tami Johnson acquired TechnoRV earlier this year, and they travel the country speaking at RV rallies, shows and other events to teach RV owners about technology that can improve their experience.

The Johnson’s talk about the company, why they are excited about the RV industry and how technology can improve the RV lifestyle for many owners. They explain the secret of their success is not just selling the products, but actually showing RV owners how to use them — a lesson that could benefit RV dealers.

  1. Gary would you please stop doing those KOA podcast with the same gal. I think if I hear another KOA podcast with the same old information bloods going to run out of my eyes. One would assume they are helping to pay your bills. Other than that keep up the good work.

    • Mike, KOA is not an advertiser on either of our websites, but the company is the largest campground brand in North America and I feel it’s an exceptionally managed and marketed firm. The only thing Toby and I discussed that was the same as last year, was the branding initiative. But, that’s a big deal because it will impact every KOA in the country, and consumers and dealers need to understand what it means.

The study we talked about was released earlier this year, but after last year’s interview. The Behind the Yellow Sign campaign, which was introduced last year, now has some numbers attached to its success. Plus, it’s being expanded. The commercial KOA produced is brand new and so is the website KOA launched four days before the interview. We also talked about the success of this year’s camping season. So, I think Toby and I had plenty of new material to talk about that warranted a second podcast interview.

Not everyone is as prolific a podcast listener as you are, so some information may have been repeated to put it into context in case a listener missed last year’s interview. I’ll try to find someone new to interview at next year’s convention.
