HSM joins RV industry in support of Bids for Kids charity event

ELKHART, Ind. — President and CEO Dave Colburn and 10 other executives from HSM, the new name of Hickory Springs, joined more than 550 ticket holders and 30 volunteers at the Bids for Kids charity dinner and auction on May 6, the company has announced. The annual event benefited the Boys & Girls Club of Goshen, Ind., raising more than $500,000 for the organization.

Held at the Northern Indiana Event Center at the RV/MH Hall of Fame in Elkhart, Ind., the 2013 event attracted managers and owners from area RV companies, including Mickey Thomas, director of sales, RV products, HSM Transportation Solutions.

“This was the sixth year that I attended the event,” he said. “The Boys & Girls Club is a great organization that has a tremendous impact on our local community. The children and youth it serves represent the future workforce and business leaders of our community, so it makes good sense for area companies like ours to step up, get involved and contribute where we can.”

HSM purchased a presenting sponsorship for the evening. Contributions to the Boys & Girls Club also came in the form of donations and auction bids. More than 100 items were auctioned, both in live- and silent-auction formats. Among the big-ticket items auctioned were two tickets to the French Open tennis quarterfinals in Paris, with air travel vouchers and five nights in a hotel near the Champs-Elysees, and tickets to the Country Music Association Awards, also with a hotel stay, according to Thomas.

“The auction items were fantastic, both in terms of what they were and the bids they inspired,” said Thomas. “For instance, a puppy that went up for auction generated $17,000 for the Boys & Girls Club — $5,000 from each of two donors who asked that their donations ensure they did not need to take the dog home, and $7,000 from the individual who ended up purchasing the puppy. That was just one example of the generosity and the enthusiasm that characterized the evening.”

Auction items also included a guided Bass Pro fishing trip donated by Thomas on behalf of HSM. “It’s always fun and rewarding to participate in the event in this way, making individual and corporate donations,” he said. “But I think all of us take just as much pleasure in joining forces as an industry and investing in the next generations of kids growing up around us.”
