WELLINGTON, New Zealand — Freedom camping may be banned in some parts of the Waitaki District as its council considers how to address an increasing number of complaints from locals.
The issue of freedom campers defecating in public areas was raised at a full council meeting on Wednesday, with councilors agreeing that the problem needed to be tackled sooner rather than later.
“People are freedom camping, they’re not self contained, and there’s not the facilities.
“They’re using our environment as a toilet.”
The council is set to draft a bylaw about freedom camping in the district, with the hope that it will be in place by next summer.
