CROWLEY, Texas — The seasons are changing and winter Texans are gathering again at RV parks and resorts across the Lone Star State.
“They come in by the hundreds each day at this time of year, and we’re happy to accommodate them,” said Brian Schaeffer, executive director and CEO of the Texas Association of Campground Owners, which hosts TexasCampgrounds.com, the travel planning website. TexasCampgrounds.com provides descriptions, photos and links to more than 350 campgrounds, RV parks and resorts across the Lone Star State.
In addition to serving as a one-stop-shop for campground information, TexasCampgrounds.com also features links to companies that provide rental accommodations and park model RVs, such as Malakoff, Texas-based Platinum Cottages (www.PlatinumCottages.com).
Here’s a sampling of some of the campgrounds and RV parks that are featured on TexasCampgrounds.com:
— Loyd Park in Grand Prairie: Loyd Park is a 791-acre recreation area located in the middle of the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex on the west shore of Joe Pool Lake. The park has 221 campsites, eight lakefront cabins, an 18-room lodge and a two-bedroom, one bath house for rent. Built on a site with large majestic oak trees just a few steps from Joe Pool Lake, the Loyd Park Lodge, which opened last year, features a fully furnished kitchen, a covered porch with rocking chairs, barbecue grill, a fire pit and big screen TVs and Wi-Fi. Loyd Park also features furnished one- and two-bedroom cabins with kitchens and bathrooms as well as large private and group campsites, each of which comes with its own picnic table, pavilion, grill and fire ring.
— Mill Creek Ranch Resort in Canton: This Park, which often serves as a venue for weddings and other special events, features park model cottage rentals and lodges. Amenities include six stocked fishing ponds, paddle boat rentals, a fenced dog park, horseshoe, volleyball and basketball courts, an infinity pool and hot tub. www.millcreeranchresort.com
— Oleander Acres RV Resort in Mission: This Park, which recently celebrated its 50th anniversary, is about an hour’s drive from Brownsville and South Padre Island. A great destination for nature enthusiasts, the park is not only located near the World Birding Centers of the South Texas Rio Grande Valley, but it features more than a dozen butterfly gardens that attract about 100 different types of butterflies.
The Rio Grande Valley Garden Club recently partnered worked with Winter Texans staying at Oleander Acres to plant fruit trees, including mangoes and avocados, as well as a variety of additional plants that attract butterflies and birds. The nearly 300-site park already has Mexican lime trees as well as grapefruit, orange and lemon trees. Oleander Acres also features leash free dog runs for big dogs and small dogs.
— Rio Vista Resort in Kingsland: This Park is located on Lake LBJ, which is popular with water sports enthusiasts. The resort offers kayak and canoe rentals, while jet skis and larger boats can be rented from other businesses along the lake. In addition to RV sites, Rio Vista Resort offers lake houses that sleep up to 20 people and villas that sleep up to eight. Most RV sites are within 200 to 300 feet of the lake, many are on shady spots, and all of them have easy access to the lake, fishing pier, and boat slips. Other amenities include a swimming pool, a water trampoline, water slides, a splash pad and mini golf.
— Summer Breeze USA Resorts in the greater Houston area: Summer Breeze USA owns and operates three resorts in the greater Houston, including Summer Breeze USA Victoria RV Resort, Katy Brookshire RV Resort and Kemah RV Resort. The Kemah resort features a swimming pool and hot tub and park model rentals, while Summer Breeze USA Victoria features heated swimming pools, a clubhouse with kitchen, shuffleboard and outside pool as well as cabin rentals. The Katy Brookshire RV Resort features a 10,000-square foot indoor heated pool, a giant indoor Texas boot shaped hot tub, a NASA-themed water park, park model and cabin rentals as well as a clubhouse and fitness center.
— The Vineyards Campground & Cabins in Grapevine: The Vineyards Campground & Cabins won this year’s “Park of the Year” and “Best Accommodations” awards from the Texas Association of Campground Owners (TACO) in the medium size park category, despite suffering severe floods in 2015 and 2016 that submerged the campground for months at a time, causing hundreds of thousands of dollars in damage.
The park also offers new services, including cable television lines and an upgraded Wi-Fi service, a new pavilion and new restroom facility. Campsites have concrete pads. The Vineyards Campground & Cabins occupies 52 acres of an 850-acre mostly wooded scenic area encircling Grapevine Lake.
