NASHUA, N.H. — As the summer RV season comes to a close, Campers Inn has set its sights on acquiring new dealerships, the company announced today.
In 1966, the Campers Inn dream was made a reality by Art and Fran Hirsch, two blue collar workers with a passion for camping. One weekend the Hirsch family went to buy their first tent camper. When they arrived at the local dealership Art was greeted tepidly by the sales staff, who was more interested in a card game than assisting him. Art believed that the salespeople had judged him because he was in a machinist uniform and did not represent a big sale, the company noted in a press release.
It was at that time Art floated the idea that he could do a better job by treating people as family regardless of their appearance. In late 1966, Art and Fran Hirsch used their savings to begin Skamper Campers in Ayer, Mass., and their dream became a reality.
From humble beginnings Campers Inn has grown to seven dealerships located in New Hampshire, Florida, Indiana, North Carolina, Georgia, and Massachusetts. Due to the success of the two newest dealerships in Elkhart, Ind., and Mocksville, N.C., Campers Inn is looking to acquire additional dealerships east of the Mississippi in order to expand its dealer network.
“We have made a commitment to look at every opportunity that is presented to us,” said Scott Hayden Campers Inn director of operations. “It is our intent to secure locations that complement existing stores and will enhance the sales and service experience of our customers. We believe employees are our biggest asset, we are committed to retaining the acquired dealerships management and staff and will make every effort to integrate them into our Campers Inn family.”
