Broad-based gains reported in Canadian retail sales

(July 22, 2009) -- "The unexpected rise in the volume of retail sales in May will help counter indications of marked weakness in the manufacturing sector reported last week, with sales volumes in that sector sinking 5.8 percent in the month," said Paul Ferley, assistant chief economist with RBC Economics Research. "Given the big drop in manufacturing activity, it will be hard to avoid a significant drop in May GDP, although today’s retail sales numbers, along with better-than-expected wholesale trade numbers released on Monday, are expected to help limit the drop to 0.5 percent."
