Bontrager: RV industry needs long-term plan

MIDDLEBURY, Ind. — “Many of us who have been in the RV industry for decades have experienced many highs and lows. We have seen the oil crisis of the ’70s, the recession of ’79, the declining market in the late ’80s and the Great Recession of 2009,” Derald Bontrager, president of Jayco and chairman of the RV Industry Association told RV Business.

“The industry is currently on a six-year run of increasing shipments and early indications are we’ll enjoy a seventh consecutive year of growth,” he added. “This growth in shipments is unprecedented for the RV industry.

“For the industry to be a relevant alternative for recreation dollars 20, 30, even 50 years from now, increased focus on these three areas needs to start today,” said Bontrager. “My view is that companies who excel in quality products and great service will be the survivors in the long run.”

  1. Amen. Derald and his brother Wilbur are the gold standard when it comes to operating a RV manufacturing company. They are never content with what they have…they are always looking to improve. I know from experience that they have the best aftermarket service centers in the industry. All to often, so many manufacturers only think about how many units they can push out the door, and forget about servicing their customers after the sale. I have seen a lot in the last 35 years, and I feel fortunate to be able to work with one of the FEW companies left in the industry that have great customer service.

    We own an Open Range Roamer that has had to have warranty work at every stop since we bought it 2-2016. Can’t believe Derald Bontrager would want such a dissatisfied customer. Middlebury offices just want to fix it. We didn’t buy a trailer to have it constantly under repair!
