Happy “glampers” pitch luxury to camping skeptics

Workampers serve as Amazon’s elves

(Dec. 26, 2009) -- A few years back Chris Dunphy and Cherie Ve Ard flipped the bird to their desk jobs, packed their belongings in a custom 5 meter solar-powered fibreglass camper, and hit the road to live “at the intersection of Epic and Awesome.” A couple months ago, while staying with friends, they noticed that Amazon was luring RVers to Coffeyville, Kansas, the site of the retail giant’s original and largest fulfilment center.

Ohio couple’s RV becomes mobile hospital waiting room

(Dec. 24, 2009) -- Erik and Cheryl Johnson of LaRue in Marion County still have a 2005 Mandalay Presidio parked in the lot. It's been there weekdays since Nov. 30, so that Mrs. Johnson can receive hyperbaric oxygen therapy at OSU Medical Center East. The two are used to the accommodations. They've camped for 32 years.

Interstate Batteries offers battery maintenance tips for RVers

(Dec. 23, 2009) -- Inactivity can be extremely harmful to all lead-acid batteries. If seasonal use is anticipated, Interstate Batteries recommends that RV owners store batteries in as cool a place as possible. However, do not store in a location constantly below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. Batteries will discharge when stored; the lower the temperature the lower the self discharge.

Deputies investigate murder-suicide at Texas RV park

(Dec. 22, 2009) -- Investigators believe a retired minister fatally shot his Alzheimer’s disease-stricken wife before he apparently took his own life, authorities said. A property manager at Palm Shadows RV Park discovered James and Pauline “Polly” Brown’s bodies inside the living room of their home along Date Palm Drive early Monday afternoon.

Infant seriously burned in Florida RV fire

(Dec. 22, 2009) --  A 3-month-old child was burned this morning in a recreational vehicle fire in Lake County and has been flown to a hospital. The infant's current condition is unknown, but it was serious enough that they flew the child from the scene to Arnold Palmer Hospital.

National Park Service to fund California Route 66 preservation

(Dec. 22, 2009) -- Of the eight states through which Route 66 passed -- the others are Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona -- California is the only one that has not done a cultural survey of the highway. With $65,000 in funding from the park service, the foundation plans to hire a consultant to document the state's portion of the Route 66 corridor.

(Dec. 21, 2009) -- After extinguishing a recreational vehicle fire in the 100 block of East Martin Drive, members of the Sierra Vista Fire Department discovered the remains of an unidentified male at about 11 p.m. Saturday.

Indiana Congressman seeks to extend RV tax credit

(Dec. 21, 2009) -- "A strong recreational vehicle industry is crucial to north central Indiana, and especially Elkhart County. Despite tumultuous times for RV makers, sales have begun to rebound and local companies are starting to hire again," said Donnelly. "I think the deduction has played a role in the comeback of the industry. I introduced this legislation to help continue the trend in rising RV purchases and new production."
