TX: Chisos Basin campground reopens as fire burns out

(May 19, 2017) -- Big Bend National Park staff reopened Chisos Basin campground Thursday as a wildfire in the park continued to smolder out.

SAN ANTONIO, Tex. — Big Bend National Park staff reopened Chisos Basin campground Thursday as a wildfire in the park continued to smolder out.

The National Park Service closed the campground this week after a fire sparked in Juniper Canyon on Sunday spread to around 1,000 acres. The NPS reported that fire crews had 89 percent of its perimeter under control by Wednesday with some crews beginning to return home. The Chisos Basin was reopened that day and the campground on Thursday.
