S.D.: Spearfish Canyon State Park plans meet resistance

(Jan. 3, 2017) -- Locals are concerned that their voices weren't heard prior to state officials moving forward with plans to turn part of Spearfish Canyon into a state park, prompting concerned citizens and government officials, alike, to speak up.

DEADWOOD, S.D. — Locals are concerned that their voices weren’t heard prior to state officials moving forward with plans to turn part of Spearfish Canyon into a state park, prompting concerned citizens and government officials, alike, to speak up.

An appearance by South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks officials at the Dec. 19 Deadwood City Commission meeting with a presentation of the project plans and a request for a letter of support from the city were followed by frank words from Deadwood Mayor Chuck Turbiville and commissioners.

“All I’ve been hearing is the feds are against this,” said Commissioner Gary Todd. “All this proposed documentation and planning, basically, do you need that to convince the feds to go along with the land trade?”
