N.C.: Chimney Rock State Park closed for fires

(Nov. 11, 2016) -- Chimney Rock State Park will closed until further notice to ease traffic congestion in the village Chimney Rock. The park is about a mile away from Lake Lure, where the Party Rock fire has grown to 885 acres from when it broke out Nov. 5. The North Carolina Forest Service asked Park officials to close the, although current forest fires are not affecting Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park.

ASHEVILLE, N.C. — Chimney Rock State Park will closed until further notice to ease traffic congestion in the village Chimney Rock. The park is about a mile away from Lake Lure, where the Party Rock fire has grown to 885 acres from when it broke out Nov. 5. The North Carolina Forest Service asked Park officials to close the, although current forest fires are not affecting Chimney Rock at Chimney Rock State Park.

The Party Rock Fire is still moving in a north, northwesterly direction but is burning on both sides of Rumbling Bald Mountain, on the opposite side of the road from Chimney Rock.

Combined with extremely dry conditions, wind is still an issue for those fighting the fire. Air crews are still conducting air and retardant drops.
