FLORENCE, Ala. — Lauderdale County Solid Waste Manager Robert Bevis is hoping an experiment will get him out of a jam.

Bevis, who also oversees the county’s two public parks, has been trying to find a park superintendent for the Wheeler Campgrounds on Alabama 101, near Joe Wheeler Dam. So far, he has not had any luck.

“We have to have someone there to do maintenance, oversee the campgrounds and collect the money from the campers,” Bevis told county commissioners during a recent work session. “We really need someone there seven days a week.”

In the past that wasn’t an issue. A county employee lived only a few minutes up the road, and he operated the campground. However, that employee retired, leaving Bevis looking for a replacement.
