Dirty tricks or healthy competition? by jack naples
Healthy competition is a good thing in fact many retailers like sprint, wall mart, progressive insurance, general motors etc all compare themselves to the competition. Even food companies do it outwardly.

Many of you including me post signs in our service department or parts department that say things like

"we beat camping world prices"
"we fix camping world repairs"
"we fix what camping world breaks"
"we are family owned so we care more"
"we fix camping world installations"
"we honor Good Sam discounts"
"we honor Presidents Club discounts"
"we have better products, better people, better service"

IF you have the resources you can do the same. It looks like the dealer is just tired of dealing with it and its odd that he did not identify himself. Stop hiding behind this forum.

How is this dirty? If the customer is offended that this would actually help your business.

They are also offering jobs to this dealers employees because cw does not have qualified people to do the job. This is a desparate measure. I was offered a job with them and thank the good Lord I did not accept would not want to be associated with such as this. Thanks cw for the BUISNESS!!!!!!

Not sure how that particular shop established the "flat rate time" required for a job, but I found that it was in the best interests of the company, the customer, and the good technicians in my shop. The ones who had "be-backs" for further repairs or who were too slow to do the work in the first place didn't like it. If done fairly the system does give a bonus to the best techs who do the work quickly and right the first time. Rightly so. Even electrical repairs can be done on flat rates. We won some, we lost some, but overall the shop profits went up, the best techs had "raises" via the bonus, and customers were happy knowing the final bill before the job was done. Well, it did cost me (or the service writer, or service mgr in some shops) more time to set it up, but it paid off.

I'm ashamed to be in the same industry with a piece of crap like CW .
That is the lowest form of business that I have seen.

Our customers are not stupid sheeple. Most will see through this like a piece of Saran Wrap.

If you can't beat your competitor with sound business practices, integrity, good products and selection then bludgeon them with "tactics".

If I were shopping for a boat, car, furniture etc. and saw this sign I DEFINITELY would stop in and shop with the targeted store JUST to see what the deal is. I think that would drive customers TO the store rather than away from it.

Not surprising. This is above and beyond fair business practices.
I've already gone a couple of rounds with the CEO of the Affinity Group(GoodSam, Camping World). I have a Life membership in GoodSam and its time I give my gold card back to them.

He just doesn't get it. The solution is for all RVers to totally boycott the businesses that are under the Affinity Group. Nasty business to say the least.

Go to familytreerv.com and you will find the solution for this problem. The only way to control your own future in the RV Business is to be in charge of it. We have created a program to do just that.

I could only imagine if the shoe were on the other foot! moves like this just bring the character of the leadership to the surface, of course we all know who that is. with plans for 20 more stores this year we could find ourselves with this sign in front of our store, then how would we respond. the time is coming for us and our industry to figure out what can be done for the long term best interest of the rv industry and our customers. with them growing in every state accross the country at what point do they become the Ma Bell, baby Bells of our industry? having very little competition wasnt good for the phone customers and its not good for ours either. the time here to start looking for ways to defeat the giant

Also there are state rules on pay. In most states a tech can not be paid on commission and the flat rate you discribe is commission. Our dealership uses a flat rate system that depending on how many hours are "collectable" they get paid more per hour. But there is a minimum they get paid per hour regardless.

That way they are paid for the 6 hours they worked on it even if only 3 was collectable. They would have 50% collectablility on that job. The hope is by the end of the week that techs are close to or above 100%.

I can not imagine this leaving a good taste in the customer's mouth.

Putting up a billboard near your competitor? Great marketing.

Putting up that kind of message? Tasteless

As for the mobile billboard and blowhorns? I don't even know what to say.

Horrid marketing. Unless this dealership is just trying to make thousands on ever camper there is no chance camping world can win with those tatics.

I can honestly say I seldom come upon a customer price shopping a camping world and when I do they are thousands more than we are.

Dirty tricks or healthy competition? Dirty tricks or healthy competition? by Greg Gerber on Wednesday, February 01, 2012

An RV dealer sent me this photo today and asked me what I thought of the tactic. Apparently Camping World has erected this billboard less than 100 feet from a competitor's lot. It's message is, "We beat this dealers price every time."  The same Camping World store hired a mobile billboard to drive back and forth in front of the dealership during an open house event last month. People inside the truck used bullhorns to shout messages at customers walking the dealer's lots encouraging them to visit the Camping World store.

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) offers short-term maintenance tips for extended stopovers by Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation on Wednesday, February 01, 2012

Freightliner Custom Chassis Corporation (FCCC) knows that not every RV enthusiast is of the constantly roaming variety. While plenty of owners routinely put 10,000 to 15,000 miles per year on their motorhomes, many others spend more time enjoying campground life. For owners who set up for stopovers of more than three weeks at a time – as many do during the winter months – FCCC offers some reminders and easy maintenance tips.

Sniveling slackers leave me smokin' by Greg Gerber on Tuesday, January 31, 2012

I had to laugh yesterday when I read the story about some flat-rate service technicians in Texas and Oklahoma who were suing their RV dealership for overtime pay.  The Southeast Texas Record reported, "According to the complaint, the defendant would estimate the number of hours they believed it should take the piece work employees to complete a particular job and then would only pay the employees for that amount of time or less. The plaintiffs claim the amount of time paid was arbitrary and had no relationship to the amount charged to the customer." Boy, would I like to be on that jury...

An investment opportunity for RV dealers by Guest Blogger on Tuesday, January 31, 2012

(Jan. 31, 2012) -- Trained and certified people are more likely to do the job right the first time, treat our customers better, and in general, make more money for the dealership. The investment in education and certification adds to our bottom line through fewer repair comebacks, better customer word of mouth, and happier employees.

To RPTIA: Don't give up your independence! by Bob Zagami on Friday, January 27, 2012

Why would RPTIA members want to rejoin RVIA?  Kicked to the curb several years ago, and used and abused by RVIA to suit their fancy; why would you ever want to go back under that roof in Reston?

Parts Technology: New Options for Easier Physicals by Carl Sconnely on Wednesday, January 18, 2012

There are a few tricks I have seen over the past 30 years that parts managers have come up with to make the counting process run a little smoother. The most efficient way is to use portable data collectors. A data collector is a barcode scanner with the ability to store what has just been scanned and uses a small keyboard to allow the user to type additional information. In its simplest form, the user scans the barcode and then types the quantity and bin location on the scanner’s keypad.  This process is repeated until all parts have been scanned. Once all the parts have been scanned, the...

FEMA: The beginning of the end to the RV industry by Guest Blogger on Wednesday, January 11, 2012

Not only does FEMA have roughly $4 billion in inventory about to hit the open market, the dealerships and the manufacturers will also have to deal with the units that were sold by FEMA in 2010 that will be used as trade-ins. I have had several people purchase a RV during the selling of these units. One person had purchased a 2006 Cardinal travel Trailer that was fully loaded with two slideouts and included holding tanks for $3,600. I looked up the trade-in value of his unit and found that the value is worth $25,000. These units could be traded in by accident. Remember that...

This is not the best way to start a new year by Greg Gerber on Tuesday, January 03, 2012

News today that Carriage RV will not reopen and that its assets will be auctioned Feb. 9 is another black eye for the RV industry, a hit to the gut to RV dealers and another serious irritation to thousands of RV owners. I am beginning to suspect that the public universities which pump out bankers by the thousands each year are training students that it is somehow better on the bank's bottom line to accept pennies on the dollar today rather than work with customers to get the full dollar -- plus interest -- a year or two later.

Pacific Coachworks president responds to RV Daily Report editorial by Greg Gerber on Tuesday, December 27, 2011

By Brett Bashaw President, Pacific Coachworks I have read your Dec. 13 article in which you predict that Pacific Coachworks would "disappear from the RV landscape" within the next thirty-six months as a result of the fact that a union has been certified to represent our production employees. At the end of your article, you ask, "Will I eat my words at the end of 2014?" We believe you will be eating your words. Before I explain why, let me share some facts with you.
