Regulators adopt new attitudes toward financing
Excellent recap of what is happening to us! by Bernie
It's Tax Day -- Let's party like we work for GSA!
I consider myself a reasonably smart human being, but no matter how much I read about this government and how f'd up it is no one seams to have the answers. Can anyone tell me what else I can do, as a hard working American who is sick to his stomach, besides vote, because that isn't enough. I know the problem, tell me the answer. My thought is it will take someone with the biggest set of balls known to mankind to clean house. Looking for some answers, and I am all ears by Joseph Bullyan
It's Tax Day -- Let's party like we work for GSA!
And we wonder why our budget is out of control?!!? OMG!!!! We are to blame though - we keep electing the same members to the most exclusive country club in the world! They are exempt from most laws, get everything paid for by the taxpayer and are set for life - while we just keep struggling to pay them for that luxury!Worse, our two presidential candidates will raise over half a BILLION Dollars to convince us to vote for them! Actually worse - we'll contribute to them and elect them!Shame on us ... by Bernie
Australia, Europe, China . . . . pick two!
It would be interesting to know what the Board members that didn't vote yes on going into China thought and are they RV mfg. or suppliers? If any of them are suppliers they must have all their products made there already! by Tony
Australia, Europe, China . . . . pick two!
As a follow-up on this discussion, there was a very interesting article in the Washington Post last week and it was reprinted in the Boston Sunday Globe this past weekend. The article is titled: "China may buy only domestic cars for official use." You can read the article at: http://b.globe.com/GTIu6A Many of the comments at the Post and Globe indicate that there is nothing wrong with a country doing this - and I agree with them. We do the same thing here in America at the federal and state ... by Bob Zagami
Australia, Europe, China . . . . pick two!
As always, Bob has done his homework and presents a great editorial. I just can't see any benefit to having anything to do with The "China" Connection. I can't think of any Industry that has actually "benefited" it's American workers by joining with China. An American purchaser of an RV has multiple choices of types, options and price already! Why add an Asian Product to that mix - that will only hurt American made products - as it always has in the past. High tech products are mass produced and ... by Bernie

Bob, you’re right on!

The Chinese government cannot be trusted and they abuse their people terribly. If an RV manufacture decides to “dance” with a partner in China, it will be the fire dance, and it won’t be China that gets burned!

The Chinese even knock off websites
I don't see a major problem with it.I just type the name then hit Ctrl & Enter and it goes to the dot com.Can not see why I would even type dot com then dot cn. by Wayne
The Chinese even knock off websites
This trick happens in all countries. Not limitied to China. It's cyber siting and tech it is illegal but that doesn't stop anyone from doing it.

If you are building a "brand" you often want to buy every version of your domain. Because even if you can get all of those domains back with the law from the people sitting on them it is just safer to own them all up front if you can.

Point of clarification from Jim this morning, the China Committee vote was unanimous but the Board of Directors vote was not.

Also, the sentence in the third pargraph from the bottom should have read, "We will continue to monitor China, not to prove somebody wrong, but to honestly report the information we get on the abuses we expect to see despite the best laid plans of RVIA." by Bob Zagami

Guns and RVers . . . making it easy to kill!
By Bob Zagami @ 5:10 AM :: :: 12 Comments :: Article Rating

I’ve been RVing for over thirty years and can probably count the number of people that told me they carry a gun in their RV on both hands and not use all my fingers. So you can imagine my surprise when a recent article in Trailer Life (October 2011) claimed that recent market research indicates more than 70% of all RVers own a handgun for personal protection. I would like to see that research!

The article appears on Page 10 and is titled: Self Protection for RVers and describes two products from Crimson Trace (www.crimsontrace.com) of Wilsonville, OR. Several things concern me about this kind of reporting.

First, I do not believe for a minute that 70% of all RVers carry a handgun. I’ve never met anybody in a campground or RV resort that told me they have a gun onboard. Now I’m sure several do and they would prefer not to advertise how they choose to protect themselves and their loved ones. But 70% of them? Never.

Is this responsible reporting from Trailer Life? The article doesn’t even quote the source of their statistics so we have no way of knowing if this information came from an editor putting the short piece together or if Trailer Life has done market research and is reporting on their findings. I would like to know where the number came from so we can validate it.

I question the responsibility of the reporting due to the nature of the products they are writing about. Crimson Trace makes a product called Lasergrips. The article states, “Lasergrips allow you to point your laser on the target and the shot will follow the red dot precisely, taking the guesswork out of threatening situation.”

Is this the RV lifestyle we all know and love? Is this the way we want to report on the joys of RVing. How many times have you wished you had a laser guide on your gun so you could blow somebody’s brains out in the campground? This isn’t something I’ve ever encountered in my many years of camping.

Why would Trailer Life even write about this stuff? If an RV prospect was researching the lifestyle and saw this article, do you think they would run right out and buy an RV? Or do you think they might seriously question the value of the lifestyle if 70% of RVers have to carry a handgun?

I suggest this is simply irresponsible journalism and they must be struggling to find worthy news to put in their magazine. If I’m the crazy one here please enlighten me here.

Dealers – do prospects and customers tell you they carry a gun in their RV?

Consumers – do you in fact carry a gun in your RV?

I’d like to think the majority of people that enjoy the RV lifestyle do so because they can get away from the environments where having a gun may be a necessity. I simply refuse to believe that 70% of today’s RVers are packing heat in the woods!

Bob- as an ex police officer and firearms trainer at a Michigan police academy and an RVer, I can assure you that a good many RVers are prepared to defend themselves and their property as allowed by the US Constitution. They would be foolhardy to discuss the fact with anyone they do not know very well. Why invite a burgler to try to find the weapons. I dont know about 70% but half would surely not surprise me. I want a crook to think twice - or 3 times about whether I am armed or not if he chooses to attempt to victimize me.

Bob.. I think you are letting your emotions guide you on this one. I have been employed in the R V business since '73 and believe from personal interaction that Trailer Life is much closer to the real number than you think. I wouldn't want to second guess them on this based on what I have heard over the years.
Our customers are far more likely to belong ro the NRA than the Audobon society.

Bob, I have to agree with the above comments. Here in Montana, I believe that the number is well over 70%. I don't know many customers that are not prepared to defend themselves from a threat with 2 legs or 4 legs. I agree with Al, very few advertise that they are carrying a weapon, but most have one or more with them. I am not ashamed to say that I always carry a firearm unless I am going to Canada. I don't believe that it is for some reason a negative for our potential customers either, at least not in Montana. This is our right as an American citizen and one we should all fight to protect.

Bob...I have to agree with Trailer Life on this one. We are full timers and I would say 80% of the people we have met carry firearms on board their RV. Most I spoke with have a valid concealed carry permit (if carrying a pistol). Think about the lifestyle we lead and the various situations that present themselves and I believe you will understand why we reserve the right to bear arms. How many have actually used their weapon? None that I know of. Is it available if we need to...Yes! I say spread the word to all the would-be thieves out there. Think twice before breaking into an RV. Lets keep our simple, enjoyable life just that.

Wow, thank you very much for the early, and enlightening, comments here. I must confess I am not a gun owner but firmly support our right to bear arms and have no problem with people carrying fire arms for self-defense. This might be a very interesting discussion!

Nope, I love it Willy !!! As a veteran myself, I want to thank you and your fellow RVers for their service to our country as we approach Veteran's Day - 11.11.11

Freedom is not free. We enjoy this lifestyle because others have fought and died for us. Thank you.

I remember a number of years ago that an RVer successfully defended he and his family from a hungry bear in the Cascade Mountains. The score was Camper 1, Black Bear 0.

Bob,

Don't fret and don't be too apologetic and willing to concede.

I'm a retired peace officer and firearms trainer myself, and I too question the validity of the figures in the Trailer Life article. The conspicuous lack of attribution is, no doubt, more by design than oversight. I also think the vast majority of the proponents of firearms carry would like the public to think it's far more common than it is. Maybe it is in certain states, or for people who travel to certain areas, but as a whole I think it's fare less common than represented in the article and certainly LESS than 50%.

I read the article as more of an Infomercial than a realistic and valid news piece and suspect that there was probably compensation involved with it's publication.

I regularly travel to some very remote sites with the same group of folks with RV's. There's probably a core group of 20 of us and some make to some events, some to others. Of the group, I am the ONLY one who carries a firearm. This group is a cross section of society, some white collar, some blue collar, several veterans, and I don't think our demographic is that much different than most of society.

From comments I read, and attitudes represented, in the various RV related forums and sites in which I participate, I personally am totally alarmed at the number of those who do carry firearms while lacking any kind of adequate training, regular qualification, permits, or knowledge of the laws concerning the use of deadly force. Even more alarming, is those who cross state lines without knowing the laws in each and every state in which they camp or transit. Many want to carry firearms, but few want to take the time, or make the effort, to do it responsibly.

You may be very interested to hear the consumer side of this discussion over on my RV Insights blog at: http://rvinsights.blogspot.com. While the number of people that carry a weapon may not be 70%, it could certainly be as high as 50% and the comments are enlightening to this reporter that does NOT carry a gun, but I do believe in a person's right to defend themselves, their family and their business. Quite a good discussion folks.
