MONTICELLO, Iowa -- The owner of Walnut Acrews Campground and others living down river from the Delhi Dam are blaming dam operators for the flood damage they’re experiencing this summer, KCRG-TV reported.
During the peak camping season at Walnut Acres everyone’s cleaning up the mess caused by the dam failure which shut down the 266-site campground. It could take a month for the campground to be fully operational again.
“This time they got caught. They didn’t anticipate it coming down for whatever reason over the two day period as much as it did," said Owner Chip Smith, who believes the dam association did not take proper care of the equipment.
He's seeking help from the Iowa National Guard to clean up the mess. “We need heavy equipment, skid loaders, and trucks to haul the sand. We are looking at hauling probably 1,000 load of sand out of here,” he told KCRG.
