FREETOWN, Mass. -- At the Forge Pond Campground, swimming is prohibited and and kayaking and canoeing are off limits on certain days after state officials ordered water levels lowered at the pond, the Herald News reported.
“It’s done a serious job on our business,” campground owner Diane Robert told the paper.
The dam at Forge Pond was breeched last spring on orders of the governor in order to prevent a disaster at the 18th century structure after it nearly collapsed in February, the Herald News reported. But, after the water was lowered, the water level at Forge Pond has been so low local residents can't access water from their wells.
Robert said the campground drilled a 450-foot well years ago, which is helping them cope with the lower water supplies.
