OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. -- For the last several weeks, 11 AmeriCorps team members have been putting in hours to assist the maintenance crews at Lake Murray State Park in shaping up park buildings, the lodge, cabins and clearing trails, reports NewsOK.com.

The mission of the AmeriCorps program is to offer young adults the opportunity to serve on projects that address critical needs. In exchange for their services, Corps members receive up to $5,500 to pay for college or to pay back existing student loans, writes NewsOK.com.

NewsOK.com writes that the teams spend the majority of their workdays scraping and painting the interior and exteriors of cabins, roofing, constructing boat docks, learning chainsaw operation, and conducting prescribed burns of brush and tree debris.
