Florida state park monkeys creating controversy

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Tourists love snapping pictures of the rhesus monkeys in Silver River State Park. They've been spotted by hikers and one may have wandered to Tampa Bay. But controversy has erupted since a trapper has been allowed to capture, with state permission, about 700 of the monkeys over the past decade, reports Tampabay.com.

Tampabay.com reports that Silver River State Park manager Sally Leib explained that she and other state officials are torn about what do do with the monkeys. They are considered a tourist attraction, but they're also considered a health hazard.

What exactly the trapper, Scott Cheslak, is doing with the captured monkeys is also somewhat of a mystery, writes Tampabay.com. His state permit does not allow him to kill or display them, but his annual reports only list how many monkeys he caught and whether they had diseases.
