Despite contributions, Texas state parks still struggling
By Kelly Cauthorn @ 8:10 AM :: :: 1 Comments :: Article Rating :: RV Parks

FORT WORTH, Texas -- The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department has pulled in $1.14 million in donations to help its parks system, but Executive Director Carter Smith conceded last week that the contributions are not likely to fix the cash-strapped system's mounting money problems, reports the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

"Time will tell, but my personal opinion is that I don't think we are going to be able to get out of this situation we're in with $5 at a time," Smith said. "We have a lot of ground to make up. In addition to this $4.6 million campaign to keep state parks open, we've incurred probably at a minimum $10 million in damages from wildfires. I don't know where we are going to find those funds."

Smith continued by stating that the generosity of every gift is deeply appreciated, but this campaign can not be sustained every year. He said they will have to figure out some other alternatives, writes the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Smith also said he's closely watching long-term weather forecasts. He says he's very concerned about the predictions of the resurgence of La Niña drought conditions and how long that will last, writes the Fort Worth Star Telegram.

Stop improving the campsites with FULL UTILITIES!! We've stopped at several Texas State Parks to find office people who were clueless about the park itself – didn’t even know how the reservation system worked!!. However, they would insist that we had to pay a "Day Use" Fee and a very expensive Full Hookup Fee. If your vehicle was a larger type camper/RV, the office would only let you go to the expensive site. We tried to just “park” without utilities – NOPE!!!! Must go to larger/full utility sites ONLY!!!!

I'm a camper - all I want is a place to park and enjoy the view, scenery, etc. Texas wasted a bunch of money to improve and compete with the private RV Parks. State Parks do not need the expensive full utilities at each site. Perhaps a general water and sewer dump for everyone.

As usual, our government is helping us with money they didn't and don't have - and you wonder why everyone hates politicians!
