PAHOA, Hawaii -- Suzanne Morphet, writing for The Calgary Herald, describes her first night camping at Isaac Hale Beach Park on Hawaii's Big Island, and how her family already felt immersed in the landscape by staying in a rented Volkswagen Westfalia van in a way one never does by staying in a hotel.
Morphet writes that her family booked the van from Happy Campers Hawaii in Hilo on the recommendation of family friends, who convinced her that it's a fun and affordable way to see the Big Island.
Before stashing their gear inside, Morphet writes that Teri Fritz, owner of Happy Campers, showed them how to pop the top to reveal the upper bed and how to pull out the back seat to create a lower bed. Towels, bedding and cooking utensils were also stored in the van and included in the price, writes Morphet.
Morphet writes that Fritz has 15 VW vans in her fleet.
